This beautifully remodelled mid-terrace home in the heart of York has been thoughtfully redesigned and extended—into both the loft and the rear courtyard—to create light-filled, contemporary living spaces while dramatically improving energy efficiency.
From the outset, our clients wanted a home that was not only stylish but also highly sustainable. We achieved this by installing natural, breathable insulation to the external walls (lime/cork insulating plaster and wood fibre), fitting new high-performance windows and doors, and introducing an air-source heat pump with an MVHR ventilation system. Combined with careful airtightness measures and new insulation to the ground floor and roof, these upgrades make the property exceptionally energy efficient and comfortable year-round.
Inside, the layout has been completely transformed. The old central staircase once split the house in two, but by repositioning it we were able to open up a flowing kitchen, dining, and living space. A rear extension floods the interior with natural light through a large rooflight and French doors, seamlessly connecting the home to its courtyard garden.
On the first floor, the new master bedroom is a standout feature with its generous proportions and vaulted ceiling, accompanied by a modern shower room. The converted loft now provides a versatile additional bedroom or study, making the most of every inch of space.
Externally, the front façade has been kept understated to respect the historic character of the street, while the rear extension embraces a more contemporary design with a striking mix of brickwork and zinc cladding.
